Another Monday, another easy tangle, and a sweet one at that.
A few weeks ago tangler Lynn Hensley shared her Heartsmeet tangle with us and today she’s back with her lovely Arkand.
Lynn writes,
This Fall when my son & I were in St. Louis we visited the Gateway Arch. The Arch was built on the founding site of St. Louis on the west bank of the Mississippi to signify that St. Louis was the Gateway to the West for many pioneers. It was completed in 1965 & includes a museum beneath it.
After seeing the Arch we wandered downtown into Citygarden Park. It’s a lovely park filled with water features & 24 sculptures. One sculpture that took my fancy was Samarkand, by Jack Youngerman. At the time I thought it would make a great tangle. Here is a photo I took of Samarkand.

Jack Youngerman, a native of St. Louis and now living in New York, is widely known for his paintings as well as his beautiful sculptures. Three weeks from today on March 25th he will celebrate his 93rd birthday.
The 63-story high Gateway Arch is an internationally-recognized symbol and an architectural marvel. Did you know you can take a tram tour to the top? A tram tour! This is from the official website:

Amazing.
When I first saw Arkand I was reminded of Mary D’Angelo’s CaligraV and while the motif is similar I also really like Lynn’s Arkand concept. It can be versatile, either as a radial-style tangle as shown or with the individual fragment used in a free-form fashion.
And there are so many interesting rabbit holes related to Arkand!
Lynn illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Arkand below and describes her tile: “I put it in the center of a tan tile & used a black Micron pen & a General’s white charcoal pencil. It is surrounded by Vivi, Sand Swirl, 4Fun and Cubine.” TIP: A close look at Lynn’s first Step shows that placing a dot to give your rice shapes a target will help immeasurably with their placement.

I will definitely give this tangle a try. I also appreciate the “ghost net” included on your sample tile. Beautiful.
What a lovely pattern to start off my week, thanks Lynn. I too have been to St Louis on two occasions, and enjoyed the ‘tram’ ride to the top of the arch. The view was spectacular and it is a very happy memory for me. We also took a trip on the Mississippi river on a paddlewheeler where I had the opportunity to play the calliope. It was wonderful!
Looks like a lovely centerpiece. Very organic and I love that you can do so many things with the petals.
I took that ride when I was 18. An unforgettable view. Thank you for sharing!

Fun tangle with lots of variations possible. I’m doing the full Mississippi river this summer on a river boat so will be looing forward to seeing the arch again too.
