Swiss CZT Hanny Waldburger joins us today to share her lovely Sistar grid-based tangle.
Sistar is a great example for Zentangle® newbies of how a tangle can look so complicated but is so very easy to tangle, “one stroke at a time”. Hanny has nearly a dozen pretty tangles on the site.
Hanny explains the name for her tangle and having 3 beautiful sisters of my own, I totally relate to having sweet Sistars,
“I have only one sister by blood but that is not the only kind of sisters there is.
I have also some sistars. These is what I call a sister to my heart.
They are stars to me, cause they bring so much light into my life. therefore… they are si-stars!
I guess everyone has such a sistar to the heart, I hope this pattern can remind us of this kind of friendship, whenever we draw it and feel the appreciation we have for them.”
Hanny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sistar below and shows three simple potential variations to explore. A grid, a rice shape or two, a few simple auras and some shading, et voilà: Sistar.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your comment helps motivate them to continue to share!

I love this pattern and the thought behind it. I have been blessed with four birth sisters, another adopted one and a wonderful sister who happens to be married to my brother. Two friends are also close enough to have literally saved my life, Georgia and Ellen. I will be using this pattern to make small tributes and tiles of gratitude for each of them. Thank you for this inspiring idea! Mary
Hanny, this new tangle is simply GORGEOUS!! I love all the variations you offer – so versatile. I haven’t drawn it yet and already it’s one of my favorites!
Sistar looks like a great pattern to explore and expand. Thank you.
Thank you! I am going to make these for my sistars!
This is absolutely lovely. thank you for sharing.
Also an imaginative fragment. Looking forward to trying it with various reticula. Thank you, Hanny.
Hanney -Your Sistars is beautiful. I knew immediately that this was a tangle for me to try. Thank you for sharing!
Sistar is one of my absolute favorites. I lean towards curvy tangles and this one certainly makes me happy. Love the variations, have already created a couple of my own. This is my first post, thanks for inspiring me to share.
I like this one. So simple yet so delicate with lots of possible variations.
A close cousin to Sindoo, and yet… different. Lovely!
Thanks everyone for all the kind comments! and thank you Linda for giving Sistar a home here on your fabulous site!
So sweet! My sister has given her work as Sistart. She and my older sister used to share in a monthly post card exchange. Our older sister passed away but we continue to send cads. It’s expanded to our two aunties too. Thank you!
I no longer have a sister, making this tangle makes my think of all the wonderful women I have met thanks to Zentangle. I lift my glass to all the sisters in this wonderful community of artist.
Love this tangle, I am not often a fan of grid tangles but like this one and that you can vary in many ways, makes them all a bit unique like the six stars in my life. Most of all love the sister explanation.
A gorgeous, elegant tangle! I love the variations as well. Thank you for sharing your talent and creativity with us.
