How to draw KULAKANÉ

Zentangle pattern: Kulakané. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. This year the Jewish religion’s Passover begins tonight with a Passover Seder and ends a week from tomorrow.

Thus to everyone observing and celebrating — Happy Easter, and Happy Passover! May your celebrations be sweet.

For two celebrations, today we have two tangles: Kulakané and KaBoom.

Both are from Canadian CZT Tabitha Bedoukian who lives in Ile Perrot, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec, and they are her first tangles on the site.

Tabitha introduces herself and her tangles,

I am from Montreal, Quebec, and one of only 2 CZTs in this province as far as I know. I “found” Zentangle® in a book at Michaels, at a time in my life that was very difficult. Like for so many, drawing became part of how I managed through it all, and now is part of my daily life. Zentangle competes with my other main passion – ballroom dancing! Days that I get to do both are very good days indeed.

My new husband and I were honeymooning in Maui two years ago. The first resort we stayed in (named Kulakane) was shingled. Each shingle was a different size and shape, and I loved how organic and random it was, even though they were essentially all rectangles. I drew it in my sketchbook, and then life moved on. Two weeks ago, as I was driving, I noticed a company logo that I loved. I got home and started drawing it, which grew into KaBoom.

It was as I was practicing KaBoom that I realized I was building it the same way I had built Kulakané, and sure enough, going back, they are closely related! Well well.

The original spelling of Kulakane does not include an accent, but as English speakers, it’s going to read like Kula-Cane, which is inaccurate. I have added an accent to show the different pronunciation than expected.

Tabitha suggests these tips for tangling Kulakané,

Try to keep the rectangles really rectangular, keeping them all in the same direction, even if the string is curved. Varying the shape and size adds an organic feel. If you make some big enough, you get to use other tangles to fill them in!

As she points out, Kulakané is quite versatile because you can use it as kind of a “blank slate” to fill with other tangles. Or not, as you wish.

Tabitha illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kulakané below and also shows some variations along with a very cool Zentangle tile embellished with bits of the Zentangle-originals Fescu and Tipple.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
