How to draw ABUKAS

Zentangle pattern: Abukas. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this California CZT Charlotte Carpentier’s pretty Abukas tangle was inspired by CZT Lynn Mead’s Abeko and CZT Molly Hollibaugh’s Arukas.

Abukas looks festive with its simple auras around the teardrop shapes and some orb embellishments. Perfect for your holiday greeting cards, place cards, gift tags and so on.

Charlotte resides south of Los Angeles in Temecula, California. She writes that she’s “been making ‘stuff’ for a very long time. She started drawing and sewing at a very young age, and after the Navy trained her as a micro-miniature repair tech (circuit board repair, soldering) she fell in love with playing with metal. And…being ADD, she keeps finding other cool things. In 2013, she found Zentangle® and changed her stars.”

Abukas starts with a large orb in the middle of the Zentangle tile section, then as many tear drops as you desire to balance around its circumference while leaving enough space between them to add the Arukas effect. I chose four tear drops for my example because I love the overall star look of it. Larger spaces and a larger central orb allow for more drops, of course.

Abukas is Charlotte’s first tangle on the site, in fact it’s her first tangle as she notes,

It is my VERY FIRST tangle. I call it Abukas, and it is influenced by Lynn Mead’s tangle Abeko and the original Zentangle® tangle Arukas.

I rather stumbled on to it while I was working on some smaller Bijou tiles for a project I am working on. …

I like how art deco it looks, and I think it has a lot of potential.

Charlotte’s first is a good one! She illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Abukas here on her blog where she shows several examples of Abukas in a Zentangle® tile and together with CZT Suzanne Fluhr’s Aloha tangle on a colorful alcohol ink monoprint ZIA piece.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

Check out the tag charlottec for more of Charlotte’s tangles on TanglePatterns.com.

I like it!! Thanks Charlotte. I really like the way you combined the two tangles into a new one. It is really pretty and flexible.

  • I’ve been a huge fan of Abukas ever since Charlotte first shared it with a CZT group. I’m glad more people will see it now. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate from Mexico City. Our son actually found us a TG dinner here for tomorrow.

Charlotte I love your Abukas! It is beautiful and your stepouts are very clear. You have many beautiful tangles on your website. Looking forward to exploring and enjoying all of your work. Thank you again and Happy Thanksgiving.

And, Happy Thanksgiving to you, Linda. I have a great much to be thankful for. My husband, my children and my grandchildren. I live in a beautiful free land where peace abounds. I have been blessed with every need. I am also thankful for you Linda and all you do to bring us joy, education and the knowledge to let our creative juices flow. That is a blessing in and of itself. I stumbled across your website while looking for something else about 3 years ago. I have a binder full of tangles that have brought me joy each and every one. Have a great day. Nancy

  • Had to stop and play with abukas as I let my big turkey Thanksgiving dinner settle. So thankful to all of you who fuel my zentangle passion and especially to Linda for giving all of us a platform to use and share our tangles. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend.
