How to draw SATSU

Zentangle pattern: Satsu. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Inspired by a piece of African fabric, Satsu comes to us from Swiss CZT Tina Hunziker and to date it joins five additional interesting tangles on TanglePatterns she has deconstructed.

Tina lives in Switzerland with her two daughters and from time to time they travel to Gambia in West Africa to visit the girls’ father, Oman.

Earlier this year they made the trip again,

to visit their father and to hold four Zentangle® workshops in a school belonging to a great project called ‘My Farm’. With the APPRENTICE Box and your GUIDE, and my teaching materials I was ready to show them something new, and it made them and me proud and happy.

Your TanglePatterns TANGLE GUIDE 2017 was a big support for me, just in case I didn’t get inspired from within to show them the next tangle.

I am truly honored and delighted Tina found her TanglePatterns GUIDE a useful teaching aid. Tina sent me these two sweet and inspiring photos of the beautiful children in her Zentangle classes in Gambia.

I LOVE this. Each one in her own world. What concentration! (Photo courtesy of Tina Hunziker, CZT)

Here Tina admires their mosaic of creativity together with the young Zentangle apprentices in one of her workshops. [Further testimony, as pointed out here, that children are entirely capable of following the Zentangle Method™ exactly the same as adults.]

Thanks so much to Tina for sharing this experience through these wonderful photos. I’m willing to bet Zentangle is spreading by example throughout Gambia now …

About her Satsu tangle, Tina writes,

On a sunny Saturday morning I got a beautiful African fabric – with just this pattern. The name is composed of SATurday and SUn.

Tina illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Satsu here on her blog where she features it and variations in two lovely Bijou tiles and a Zentangle® tile. There’s more background on African fabrics on Tina’s African Artist tangle.

If you haven’t visited Tina’s blog before, be sure to admire her lovely sculptures from her life prior to becoming a CZT. A talented artist indeed.

BTW – you can use Google Translate to read her blog descriptions, for example this is Tina’s description on her page of sculptures:

For a while I worked as an assistant with various sculptors and artists in Ticino. In 1995, at the age of 22, I met Giorgio Scarmi and soon had my permanent studio in his “Atelier di Giorgio Scarmi” in Valle Verzasca. I was able to work as a freelance sculptor and to get to know other artists. I chiselled my ideas into larger and smaller pieces of marble. Often I also brought stones from the most beautiful river I know. The stones had already been preformed and polished by the river Verzasca, which offered itself to chisel faces. Also lizards, typical of the south of Switzerland, were one of my favorite motifs.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

Love this new tangle of yours. Very easy to remember and many ways to make it more. . . .more of your own.

Miss you Tina, remembering our great time at seminar.
Hope to see you again somewhere, sometime.

Best good wishes from New England, Maria

  • Dear Linda, thanks a lot for all this words. If I could write with all my love and inspiration in this kind of flow, my blog would still be the place I would love to share my experiences with zentangle. Don’t worry about a thing, ’cause many things are all right…so in my own words???

  • Bunny, thanks for your comment. It was such a great way to give something to the people there.

  • Dear Maria, I wanted to send some words and pics about this experience to you, Rick and the Family…now you got it on this way. The head Teacher of “my farm” got the “one stroke at a time” fast. He will continue with the class, of course I have left the APPRENTICE pack with him, he totally appreciated. Hope that one day I can come and get some real zentangle-energy in Rhode Island again. Hug.
