How to draw LOLLYWIMPLE

Zentangle pattern: Lollywimple. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. In view of the fact that Lollywimple starts with a pencil structure, CZT Sandy Hunter doesn’t specifically call Lollywimple a tangle.

Quoting from the Zentangle blog, to be “drawn as a tangle … [a pattern] has to be done without any underlying pencil structure“.

Sandy acknowledges Lollywimple is “more art, less zen for sure“.

However, inspired by another tangle which I’ll be adding next week, there’s a way around this pencil dilemma so I can include Lollywimple as a tangle here on TanglePatterns.

Lollywimple is a fun pattern and by using an ink stroke in place of a pencil guideline to connect the initial orbs (“lollies”) of Sandy’s Step 1, I’ve “converted” it to a tangle. After you’ve connected the lollies O O O with the pen stroke, then you add the “wimples” = ) ) ) …

I’m not sure the ink-connecting-stroke-in-place-of-pencil will work for many of the pretty examples Sandy demonstrates because I haven’t tried them yet. But for this “ribbony” stripey version, it does. And of course when you’re working with a Zentangle’s String, you will indeed have a pencil line in place to take advantage of with Lollywimple (or lollies and wimples) if you so desire.

Sandy has several wonderful tangles on the site and among them Puffle and Cruffle are sure to be part of almost every tangler’s arsenal of go-to tangles. Okay, probably all of them.

Sandy illustrates how to draw Lollywimple here on her blog. In her own inimitable style, Sandy combines her sense of humor with very detailed guidance on how to experiment with Lollywimple. Lots of wonderful examples too! I totally concur with Sandy on the subject of lengthy auras that gain a mind of their own.

I’m sure Lollywimple will provide lots of fun experimentation this weekend, Enjoy!

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

Incredible tangle. I had to actually try it out in my sketchbook before I commented. I wanted to try it without the pencil guideline first. And it worked out just fine. It would be fun to follow a pencil string too. I’ll work on it more and see what I come up with. I did do one where I didn’t close off the edges too. I really like that one. This is so much fun and so many wonderful variations. Thank you for Lollywimple Sandy!

  • Thanks for introducing me to your lollywimple and cruffle tangles. They will be fun to use.

I love this tangle, looks like the underside of a caterpillar to me!
