How to draw HAMAIL

Zentangle pattern: Hamail. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comToday’s pretty tangle pattern comes from Swiss CZT Tina Hunziker who has several lovely tangles on the site.

Hamail was named for a pattern Tina had drawn on an envelope she mailed to her fellow Swiss CZT, Hanny Waldburger.

She liked it so much that i was motivated to make a step-out for it. Hanny became a wonderful friend to me in the last months, et voilà, i’m happy that i did find that name for this pattern, which shows my gratitude for our friendship and collaboration.

HA = Hanny + mail = Hamail.

I found that Hamail needed me to first visualize a plan for how large I wanted the “petals” to grow to fit the space and where they would begin to diminish in size again. My example is a plain vanilla one with a little shading but Tina’s lovely examples provide ideas for much fancier versions. I also tried a different method of drawing Hamail where I simply drew a large “scalloped” spiral and then added the inner strokes but Tina’s version seems to turn out better for me.

Tina illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Hamail here on her blog. Accompanying the steps are her beautiful Zentangle® tiles containing several variations or embellishments of Hamail, together with several Zentangle-original tangles.

Check out the tag tinah for more of Tina’s tangles on TanglePatterns.com.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. I have loved this one from the get-go. Such a beautiful pattern.

    This one is fascinating – I’m having difficulty getting it, but will keep practicing.

  • Dear Linda, dear everybody,
    I just got the message of Hanny, that HAMAIL is on tanglepatterns now. I went on google first, and discovered that HAMAIL means talisman. I have tears in my eyes, because that fits so perfect. And I’m also happy to read my gratitude for this friendship on tanglepatterns again.
