How to draw PAND

Wow, what wonderful emails and comments in response for my 5th Tangleversary on Monday! And how great to celebrate it with several tanglers whose birthday is also May 4th. Thanks so much you’ve all made my week for me. And it’s especially great to hear from new voices as well as some of you “old folks” (meant with affection 😉 ) who’ve been with me for a while. Ai Ling Hung is from Taiwan and she traveled to Providence RI very recently to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher at CZT18, joining the ranks of many CZTs in her country.

Pand is Ai Ling’s first tangle on the site and it’s a very interesting, easy grid-based pattern with lots of potential for variation.

Ai Ling writes that she’s is from Tainan City in the southern part of Taiwan,

I learned tangle patterns via books and internet at first. In order to get to know more about Zentangle®, i took a class from CZT Damy Teng (Damy).

‘Pand’ is my first tangle pattern. When i was sitting on the sofa ‘P’ and ‘d’ just came into my mind, I tried to draw it as a pattern. It is really easy and fun to make variations.

This pattern is created with only P and d, So I named it ‘Pand’.

Tainan is one of Taiwan’s cultural capitals, for its rich folk cultures especially the famous local snack food. I invite you to come to visit my hometown and enjoy our delicious food.

While practicing Pand I was struck by the unusual base formed by using just the horizontal and vertical strokes of the grid with the straight strokes of the P and d, minus the loop part. (In my example above I inked them in.) It turns out rather Mondrian-like (without the red-blue-yellow) and I’m thinking many other interesting tangles could be developed with this structure as the base.

A good time to remind you that grids do not have to be exactly even and parallel, most tangles look great with a “warped” grid and it adds a sense of movement too. Experiment! Play!
