How to draw PHROZ

Given the amazingly frigid temperatures across the US and Canada this wintery week, this tangle is very timely.

CZT Lynn Mead shared her very popular Fassett with us just over a year ago and today she’s back with “Fassett’s sister“, Phroz. More recently Lynn shared her somewhat challenging Whirlee tangle with us.

She writes,

“I was going to draw Fassett one day but this tangle appeared instead. It is very closely related to Fassett so I think of it as her sister.

I’ve named it Phroz as it looks a bit like crystals and was born in winter.”

In her example of Fassett Lynn shows four different grid variations. Phroz is developed on yet another type of grid based on triangle shapes.

Phroz is one of those tangles that also looks very good in the early stages of drawing it, for instance if you stop at Step 3 as in this example. But it really does gain its full impact at Step 4 and if you choose, adding the solid black fills of the final Step 5.

Lynn illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Phroz below with a close-up detail section so you get a better idea of the steps. Her first example shows Phroz as a monotangle with a very creative use of white space within the tangle, and her second example shows the tangle siblings together.

Tomorrow, February 19th, is Chinese New Year and here’s a little background about this major holiday:

Chinese New Year is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese. …

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year vary widely. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year’s Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “good fortune” or “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity.” Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. – Wikipedia
