How to draw KOZY

Zentangle pattern: KozyIt’s Presidents Day here in the US today and that means a very welcome long weekend mid-winter break. Several Canadian provinces are also enjoying their Family Day long weekend. Perfect for staying warm and … Kozy.

Kozy is a fun tangle pattern shared with us by Dutch tangler Marieke van Nimwegen, and it’s her first on the site.

As you’ll see below in Marieke’s own examples below, Kozy is the type of tangle that benefits from having a bit of space to grow.

Here Marieke tells us about her experience with Zentangle®:

I am a tangler from The Netherlands, who started tangling in 2013. I bumped into it by accident; I was looking for something on the internet, when I saw the word ‘Zentangle’ somewhere. I wondered what it was and hours later ? I knew! I ordered The Book of Zentangle by Rick and Maria and I knew this was something I had to try! Not long after that, I found your website and I can say I visit it almost daily, as Zentangle has become a very important part of my life.

It helped me, as so many others, through a very difficult time in my life and now-a-days it is part of my daily routine. In Holland we have a saying: a day without … (Zentangle, in my case), is a day not lived. And so it feels for me! I use it to relax, to become more mindful and to practice my skills. And now and then, I love to express my creative feelings in ZIA.

One day I was playing with some elements of different tangles, and by surprise, I created a new tangle. I called it Kozy. Since then, I used it a lot in different Zentangles and I discovered it is a nice tangle to shade and to fill up all sort of spaces. It is also a very flexible tangle: you can make it really big or very small, but it never looks the same. And to me it is a ‘warm’ tangle; I think it looks like a cuddle, something snuggie and cozy.

Marieke illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kozy below and includes it in two beautiful ZIA’s (ZIA = Zentangle-inspired art).

What wonderful things you can do with Kozy when you practice it a while! (Might Kozy be a relative of Showgirl?)

I bet those rhinestones will trigger a lot of creative thoughts out there. (And what other embellishments might we come up with to enhance our ZIAs?)
