How to draw BEANIOUS

Zentangle pattern: BeaniousHappy Monday, y’all! Ready for another week of new tangles? Hope you also saw the two freebie Frugal Friday tutorials, if not be sure to check them out here.

Beanious is a cool tangle pattern from Scottish tangler Abbey Gray and it’s her first on the site. Although this may look complicated to draw, it’s really very easy “one stroke at a time.”

Beanious came about by accident as Abbey was practicing the Zentangle®-original tangle by co-founder Rick Roberts, Schway.

She writes,

“I was introduced to Zentangle a year ago, after watching a friend create fabulous artwork. I remember picking up a pen and trying Knightsbridge and Cadent and that was it – instant addiction!

I have a demanding and busy job as a doctor, and I use Zentangle to relax and clear my mind each day. I am not ‘artistic’ by nature, and love the sense of achievement that tangling brings me. …

I was practicing a new pattern, a great arrow tangle, when I realised I had a mishap on the linework… I didn’t let that put me off and worked out a way to create another tangle using the new pattern. I named my new pattern BEANIOUS as it’s a favourite word of mine, which is not linked directly to the [appearance of the] tangle (as in the original zentangle philosophy!)**

I’ve found myself incorporating Beanious into lots of Zentangles recently, it is very flexible and open to interpretation. … I am so honoured to be sharing my tangle with you.

** [For further explanation of this remark, see  ‘Naming your pattern” on the SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN page.]

Abbey illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Beanious below and shows ways to vary it in her Zentangle. I’ve used another variation in my own example.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. So many of my Zentangles become larger ZIAs. I have been working with the posted threads to practice keeping to the smaller formats.

I am enjoying that a lot, but still, my natural inclination is to create bigger artwork.

Thanks for sharing your new tangle. I’m looking forward to trying it.

This is such fun, easy, pretty pattern! I am new to Zentangle and I spend a good amount of time drawing during the week. I want to come out with my own and it is not that simple. Congratulations! Great tangle! I like it very much!
