How to draw LAZY EIGHTS

Zentangle pattern: Lazy Eights. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.“Inspired by the number eight”, Lazy Eights is a sweet tangle pattern by Denielle Noe and its her first on the site.

Strictly speaking floral motifs aren’t usually considered tangles because they are objective and represent a natural object. For Zentangle® tangles must be non-representational. But I think Lazy Eights skirts the edges and is abstract enough to be added to our collection. Think eights, not flowers 😉

Simple intersecting figure eights are the basis for this organic tangle that fills up a section easily with a very pleasing effect.

Lazy Eights is a very simple tangle that uses a simple figure eight drawn line repeated in two directions; one vertical and one horizontal. Doing this creates a little flower-like bloom. Lines are drawn from the center outward as an added flair to each of the open petals. As a final touch I added a dot in the center of each bloom to complete the look of a flower. Once you complete one bloom, you just simply keep repeating the Lazy Eights pattern to fill in the empty spaces. As you can see, you can create very small blooms to very big blooms which gives a nice variation to this tangle.

Denielle Noe is an artist who likes to dabble in many different art forms. She started out as a fine art photographer and graphic designer but began moving towards drawing as her preferred medium. In the summer of 2012 she was given a book about Zentangle as a gift from her husband on her birthday and has been hooked on the Zentangle method ever since! Since then, she has been tangling the hours away and has even started her own blog to document her tangling journey.

Denielle illustrates the steps for drawing Lazy Eights here on her blog and features it in a lovely monotangle of cascading Lazy Eights.

    Hello Linda,
It is indeed a lovely pattern! I wonder if we can construct other patterns from numbers ?! THAT could be an interesting challenge I think!
Thanks again for all your devotion !

  • Jo

    Hi Sue
I have started doing patterns from numbers to give me inspiration as I am new to this. I started on the 1st March and am doing one every day. When I get to the end of the month I am going to start on the alphabet. Its amazing how addictive it is and I have created such different patterns that you cant even see the numbers on some of them.

      Hello Jo,
That sounds great!I’ve been playing around with 6 and 7 today, but so far nothing outrageously brilliant has happened!! I’ve done a lot of work with tangles and the alphabet (I’m a Calligrapher by profession so that’s not too unusual!)and I continue to match them in small hand bound books. Would love to hear more of what you are doing. Linda’s site here is the best for tangles on the web, and as far as I’m concerned she is god’s gift to tanglers! !

This is a lovely, fast and fun design! I have not tried using numbers before, but I will give it a go starting today. You are right Sue, this site is fantastic (and Linda too)!

    Hi Sue

Well I am only doing numbers at present. Its 12 today. You don’t have to have the numbers separately, try drawing a big 6 and putting the 7 above and through it. For 12 I have drawn a 1 through the middle of the 2. I’ll bet everyone, given a number, will make something completely different from it. Jo

Yes Jo it’s fun trying different numbers together like a 3 and an 8 for example! There are a million possibilities and then perhaps all the “tangleations”, which might grow, with the addition of a number shape thrown into the mixture for good measure……..whooeee!
