Tangle Refresher 61

As those of us who live in hurricane-prone parts of the USA are familiar, each year tropical storms are given names following the letters of the alphabet beginning with A and ending up, we pray, not too far into the alphabet.

Today we have reached the letter K, with Tropical Storm Karen currently crossing the Gulf and aiming somewhere between Pensacola FL and New Orleans LA, arriving at landfall tomorrow.

Naturally when we hear the words “hurricane” and “New Orleans” in the same sentence, we flash back to Hurricane Katrina and her devastation in August of 2005. Karen is predicted to briefly reach hurricane strength when she reaches landfall and considerably below the devastating wind strength of “storm of the century” Hurricane Katrina.

Not many people outside of South Florida realize that Hurricane Katrina first wrought mayhem on the southeast coast of Florida (see her complete track here). On Thursday, August 25th, with winds of 75-80 MPH the eye of Hurricane Katrina came ashore just south of Fort Lauderdale where Robert and I lived at the time. As I recall, the “blue roof” syndrome (so called for the blue tarps fixed over homes to act as roofs until they could be repaired) lasted as a constant visual reminder in the landscape for a couple of years. And we were out of power (ie. air conditioning, cooking, food refrigeration, TV, internet) for many blisteringly hot and humid Florida summer days.

After striking South Florida and crossing the upper Keys and lower Everglades, Katrina moved through Florida Bay into the Gulf of Mexico to gain strength and level catastrophic devastation to New Orleans when she arrived 4 days later on Monday, August 29th. Thankfully the 2013 storm season which lasts until December 1st has been “mild” with only two of the 11 storms reaching hurricane strength so far. And the letter K, unlike Katrina in August, has come along 6 weeks later into the season. Let’s all pray Mother Nature keeps it that way and that all the folks who are affected by Tropical Storm/Hurricane Karen this weekend and the days to come remain safe from harm.
