How to draw 8’s

8’s is a tangle pattern from CZT® Jane Eileen Malone of Glendale, AZ and it’s her first on the site.

This is a bonus tangle because Jane Eileen has also posted three pattern variations and we’ll get to those shortly.

So what does the name 8’s mean? Jane Eileen explains,

“I found a pattern similar to this one day when I was surfing the web. It appeared to have some other shape than a circle in the dark spots, and it took me a while to get it deconstructed. A long while. Eventually,  I found it much, much easier to make this similar design using dots instead.  Then I had to figure out if it was really different than Mi2 by Mimi Lempart, a fellow CZT. After looking closely and about ruining my eyesight in the process, I realized that Mi2 has 4 black ovalish spots that are the ‘bones’ of her tangle, and this one has 8 round spots, thus the name, 8’s.”

In many ways 8’s also reminds me of Karry Heun’s Summer Sitter, they are of the same “family”.

This tangle requires that you get the unusual dot grid base spaced correctly or the whole thing gets wonky. After I’d practiced 8’s a few times, I changed Jane Eileen’s steps so I could follow them without having to keep referring to the drawings.

Eventually this is what I came up with — in Step 3 I drew all the “top” curved lines, and for Step 4 I drew all the “bottom” curved lines. Mixing them together as in the original Steps 3 and 4 had my head spinning figuring out which pairs to connect. Probably just me.

	Parte Tres
	Parte Quatro

Be forewarned — these are more complicated to follow and to draw. I had to refer to the steps repeatedly to get the curved connecting lines going in the correct direction. But these patterns should keep you challenged all weekend.
