How to draw MR.E

This fun tangle is from fellow Floridian and my CZT#7 classmate Shawn Hayden, and it’s her first on the site. Shawn lives in South Florida and she’s currently teaching at AC Moore in Pompano Beach, Jerry’s Artarama in Deerfield Beach, The Stamp Boutique in Pompano Beach and Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale.

When Shawn first sent me Mr.E, I recognized it as the tangle Worms. Worms is similar to a Line Design art lesson also posted about 3 years ago, but the lesson extends the arcs all the way outwards to the edges and exaggerates some sections so that adjacent sections become “pinched off”, as described in the lesson.

Shawn writes, “Even though the beginning steps are that of Worms, beyond the first few iterations the similarity ends. I take the Line Design in a different direction. Worms and Mr.E are to each other like W2 and Huggins … They start the same but end up different.

I came across this pattern from an elementary art lesson posted on line by Ted Edinger, an elementary art teacher in Nashville, TN. He posted the Line Design art lesson in his blog. I did the lesson a couple of times because I liked the Zentangle aspects of it and it was one of those design patterns that get you ‘in the zone’. I wrote to him and asked permission to create a tangle out of it. He gave me his blessing. He also said the exercise had been around for years and he was not the creator, but noticed it had gained popularity because of his blog. So I have called the tangle Mr.E … it sure is fun to do and its very organic and is different every time you do it.

For the last 30 years, I have taught a variety of art classes, including ceramics in adult education classes and graphic design at Deerfield Beach High School, bookbinding at local art stores and drawing and painting classes. I hold a BFA in Theater from Florida Atlantic University, which includes a concentration in set design and painting, costume design and prop creation. While searching for a way to apply these skills, I came across Zentangle® and never looked back.

I was certified to teach Zentangle in October of 2011. Since that time I have done many demonstrations, workshops and have introduced Zentangle to many groups and individuals in the area. I am a member of ArtServe of Broward County, Broward Art Guild and Plantation Art Guild and Goldcoast Watercolor Society. I have been an exhibitor at a variety of local art shows and sales.“

Here are Shawn’s steps for drawing Mr.E and examples drawn with a single line (Steps 1 & 2) starting at the bottom, and one with the starting line going around the perimeter. This is a fun technique and I think you’ll find lots of places to use it.
