How to draw FLOURISH

Flourish is from Canadian tangler Stephanie Skelton from Barrie, Ontario, and her first on the site.

As it happens, I was born and brought up in the great province of Ontario and know the Barrie area pretty well. It’s located in prime cottage and ski country, nestled on the shore of Lake Simcoe about 60 miles north of the amazing city of Toronto. [Time out for nostalgia sniffles.]

History digression: Did you know that Barrie played an important part in our North American history? It had a significant role as a supply depot for British forces in the War of 1812 which is celebrating its bicentennial extensively this summer in the USA and Canada. (If you google “War of 1812 celebrations”, you’ll see a whole list. This Washington Post article is one good one.) “Barrie was also the final destination for one branch of the The Underground Railroad. In the mid-19th century, this network of secret routes allowed many American slaves to enter Barrie and the surrounding area.” Okay, back to tangles …

Flourish is a lovely tangle pattern on its own as a single motif or as a repeat pattern based on a grid, as I’ve done here with some shading added.

Stephanie introduces herself, “I’ve been tangling for about a year and got into it because a friend shared the link with me – created a monster, really! I’ve  been teaching for 12 years. I’ve shared Zentangle with my grade 8 students, who love it, and have students from other grades begging to learn it.”
