The rather festive-looking tangle Wirly Bird comes to us from tangling newbie, mother of 3 and grandmother of 3, Cathy Clifford of Springs, Gauteng, South Africa.
Wirly Bird is a simple pattern to draw and fun to use your imagination to embellish within the “wirlies”. I played around with a couple in my example though drawing these on a larger scale than mine would give more latitude for that type of variation to the tangle.
“I was introduced to Zentangle® by a friend of mine at work. She noticed that I was very stressed and suggested that I try doing tangles to refocus and become less stressed. It has helped a lot.
I am the type of person who will do lots of research before I tackle a project. I like perfection ‘which adds to my stress’. So when I started doing tangles, I had rulers, stencils of various shapes (from when my children were young), did it in pencil, so if I made a mistake I could rub it out. But the more I researched Zentangle the more I realised that, tangling is all about doing things free hand, in pen and not worrying about it being perfect, (it’s still difficult letting go trying to do things perfect) I enjoy doing tangles now that I have realised anything goes. No paper or book cover stands a chance when inspiration hits me.“
Here are Cathy’s step-by-step instructions for her drawing Wirly Bird tangle pattern.

Hope you enjoy the last weekend before Christmas, and make time to tangle! See y’all on Monday…

I love this! It looks so easy. I will definitely use it tonight when I tangle. Thank you for sharing.
This is a great tangle and it is so easy! It has great versatility. I want to utilize the “Wirly Bird,” tangle in some of Laura the Diva’s previous challenges. First, I plan to “biggify’ the wirly blades so that they can accomodate other tangles. In essence, the “Wirly Bird,” will be my string. Within the “biggified” wirly blades could be the challenge using the 3 basic shapes of square, circle and triangle. Or this tangle could be used for “Pinwheels for Peace.” Or even turned into a Poppy for the “Remembrance Day,” challenge. My brain is spinning with Wirly Birds! Gotta go do some tangling – see ya! 🙂 Dee
Thanks just starting to tangle and this one is great for a beginner it really has me thinking
Lynn
Instead of drawing the “Wirly Bird,” in a circular pattern, I made it a square and “Biggified,” the pattern. I then filled in the blades with tangles such as “Retro,” “Organza,” “Dragonair,” and lots of lines and dots. Thanks for sharing! Dee aka GingerKatte
