Hello there my tangling friends, happy weekend to you!
We have a cool woven ribbon-style tangle for your weekend inspiration to explore. Yaiba is from Japanese CZT Naho Shingai and it’s her first on the site.
Naho introduces herself and shares her inspiration for Yaiba:
Hello everyone. I live in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Also, my birthplace is Miho no Matsubara, one of the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” painted by Ando Hiroshige in the Edo period. In the cold season, Mt. Fuji is very beautiful when seen from the pine grove.
Today, I was inspired by the wrapping cord on the handle of the sword carried by Japanese samurai.
Naho illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Yaiba below where she includes two examples and explains, “Arrange the Ys evenly, turn the tiles, and place another Y on top. Repeat the same thing by turning the tiles back over between the Ys you drew first. It will look very beautiful when you have diamonds lined up in the middle.” In her examples on the tile Naho uses curved strokes for the Y -shapes, a very elegant look.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Ooh ?, I really like this one- it’s very classy looking and versatile!
Naho this looks so beautiful. I love patterns that look like they weave together. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful pattern! Thank you for sharing!
I loved learning this tangle and hearing its story! Thank you for sharing this delightful tangle. ?
This is a lovely tangle, I will be trying this one out for myself – it does look challenging to get the proportions right. I bet in a grid with some shading it would look like wonderful smocking!
Thank you everyone for your heartwarming comments.
