How to draw WIKPIK

This week I am honored and blessed to be an online guest of Rick and Maria and the folks at Zentangle for the annual CZT-only zenAgain 2022 seminar. This year’s seminar’s focus is Zentomology. Yesterday we CZTs were introduced to a new term, tangle genuses and we explored a brand new Zentangle®-original tangle, Wyfore, named for Martha’s son (Maria’s grandson), Wyatt.

A page for Wyfore will be added to the site when the steps are made public by Zentangle HQ. Wyfore is #174 on “Linda’s List” and I understand we’ll be adding more new Zentangle-original tangles to the list as the seminar continues through Wednesday.

This is also by way of saying, I’ll be slower than usual in attending to my email this week so thanks in advance for your patience while I’m learning all about Zoom and more about Zentangle’s Zentomology.

My gratitude and thanks to all the beautiful folks at Zentangle HQ for inviting me as their zenAgain guest.

Our easy and pretty Wikpik tangle is from new CZT Julie Tiu and it’s her first on the site.

Julie introduces herself and her ribbon-style tangle,

I’ve been tangling for over 10 years … but I finally made the investment in myself to get certified (CZT #39) and I’m so glad I did! I dabble in mixed media, and in the past did more sewing and paper craft projects. My day job is managing social media for an independent loose leaf tea shop where I host tea tastings and teach tea classes.

Wikpik was inspired by the architectural features of the historic Pickwick Theatre in my hometown, Park Ridge, IL.

More about Pickwick Theatre on Wikipedia

The theater features art deco architecture and on top of the columns outside, there are decorative iron lanterns that have an “S” detail.

I’ve been drawing this tangle for years, but it’s time to send it out into the wild. Wikpik makes a lovely border, and I’m sure it has more lives to live in the community.

Julie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Wikpik below where she notes at Step 5, “I turn upside down to do ‘S’.”

Julie’s sample tiles include, Betweed, Bales, Rozhki, Shattuck, Crescent Moon, Flukes, small Tripoli fragments, and a couple of Mooka details.”

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
