Hi everyone, wishing you all the luck of the Irish today!
Today’s Kaitio tangle is from Alaska CZT Donna Pedersen and it’s her first on the site.
Though not strictly a 3-leafed shamrock shape befitting the day, Kaitio can be tangled with either a 3-“leaf” or 4-leaf version or a mix of the two so it’s perfect to have fun with today.
Curious about the difference between shamrocks and four-leaf clovers?
Like England’s Rose and Scotland’s thistle, the shamrock is an iconic symbol of Irish heritage and culture. It appears on the flag of Erin Go Bragh, meaning “Ireland Forever”, was utilized by St. Patrick as a symbol of Irish identity, and can be found on the uniforms of Irish sports teams, and on the tail of the national airline, Aer Lingus. Any Saint Patrick’s day event anywhere in the world is incomplete without it. But although the use of the shamrock as Ireland’s national symbol dates back thousands of years, there appears to be a confusion about what constitutes the traditional shamrock; in particular, it appears to often be confused with the four-leafed clover.
To clear the confusion between shamrocks and four-leaf clovers, have a read here. Here’s a hint: “While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
As for our Kaitio tangle …
Donna writes,
I originally learned about Zentangle when I took a class at the Sr. Center [in Anchorage]. It was love at first tangle.
I didn’t have much experience when I took the CZT #26 course. I wasn’t thinking I’d be a teacher – there was just nothing I’d rather do than have the opportunity to tangle with Rick & Maria.
This tangle came about by accident. I was attempting a tangleation of a heart pattern, which was kind of working. Then I figured out a totally different way to do it so that it no longer resembles the tangle that first got me started.
I first called it “Lucky Me”, but since there was already a tangle called Lucky, I changed it to Kaitio, not sure why (so I figure it’s a good tangle name).
Donna illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kaitio below where she features it with some variations in a sweet tile with CO2 and Beadlines.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
