How to draw UNGTO TURN

Zentangle pattern: Ungto Turn. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. Today’s pretty Ungto Turn tangle is from Korean CZT James (Jong Seung) Lim and it’s his first on the site.

There are tangles on the site sharing DNA with Ungto Turn (check out radial tangles in the TANGLES BY TYPE section in the left sidebar) but I loved how James described his inspiration and how it comes to life in his tiles.

James introduces himself and explains the inspiration for his Ungto Turn tangle,

I’m a CZT#26, but I also participated in the CZT#33 seminar again.

I live in Seoul, South Korea. I’m not a full-time artist but a Zentangle® artist.

One day, I saw the dance performance of a Korean traditional dance team.

Fantastic! I was especially impressed with the group dance. Dancers wear traditional long skirts (HanBok). As dancers rotated, the long skirt swirled around dancers.

At that time, when the broadcast camera was shooting from above, I felt as if a lot of flowers were blooming.  So beautiful.

That image inspired me to make a tangle.

When I began to do some research on traditional Korean dance — about which I knew virtually nothing — I learned there are many types and I wasn’t clear what I was looking for in this particular case. So I asked James if he could direct me to a YouTube video showing the type of dance that inspired his tangle.

He replied “I searched for the subject term ‘Korean traditional dance’. But I couldn’t find a video that exactly matches that I was inspired. Fortunately, I found similar videos related to it.” This Korean Sword Dance is performed by Chungnam arts high school students and James refers us to this part starting at 2:35:

For those curious to see more James also suggested these two additional videos:

  1. https://youtu.be/xy760oeu7HA – beginning at 1:50 – Seo Jongye Korean Dance performance commemorating the opening of the SAC Art Hall
  2. https://youtu.be/mOSH6rVt6Cw – beginning at 4:00 – Daegu Student Center “All That Korea” Junior Dance Team ‘Hwang Jini’

About Ungto Turn itself James writes,

“Ungto” is a beautiful lady’s Korean name and “Turn” is just a dance turn.

I deconstructed the image of swirled skirts. And try to make steps.

It took a few days of deconstructing and tangling. Finally, I made “Ungto Turn”.

This tangle is so simple. It would be nice to draw when you think of the geometrical stairs.

Above all, I believe that if you express the swirling feeling well, this tangle will be better.

As with many tangles, I found that turning your tile is a big help in Ungto Turn. The name kinda says it 😉

James illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ungto Turn below where includes a beautiful monotangle.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
