Today — the 11th day of the 11th month — is observed annually as a special day of remembrance and honoring all who serve their countries and protect our freedoms.

Here in the USA we observe it as Veterans Day, while in the UK and Canada and throughout the Commonwealth it’s known as Remembrance Day.

Canada Poppy

“Lest we forget”

Each year Lapel poppies like this one are sold in Canada to help raise funds for various service charities and similar efforts are carried out in the UK and elsewhere. This time of year everyone contributes to a “Field of Poppies” by wearing their poppy on their lapel and in fact Remembrance Day is often referred to as Poppy Day.

We thank and honor our Veterans and all those who are serving, not just on November 11th but every day, for their brave and selfless service to our countries and for their personal sacrifices that ensure our democracies and the freedoms we all enjoy. Blessings for each and every one and for their families as well.

And now for today’s pretty tangle …

Elance tangle is from Guernsey tangler Sarah Harrison who recently shared her Mika and Keeta tangles with us. Elance is Sarah’s fifth on the site.

Lately I’ve been getting quite a few tangles that can be the focal point of a tile. It’s amazing how a center starting point of a simple orb or square or triangle can produce so many different and lovely outcomes. Two early examples of this on the site are CZT Vicki Bassett’s pretty Biscus and Showgirl, tangles she deconstructed pre-CZT 🙂

Sarah writes:

I am so excited about this new pattern i came up with in the early hours of the morning.

The name came from a bull that i named when i used to run a farm. His mum was called Elegance. I thought the pattern looked very Elegant but didn’t want elegance. So it got his name which was Elance.

So simple yet very effective. Lots of potential for variations as well.

When drawing it my only advice would be when you start the ‘fins’ in step 2 make sure it goes straight inline with the shape in the first step.

I have also included a couple of variations one being the lines in step 4 once over half way, they curve the other way. The other one is neat with the same amount of fins. Step 6 shows it with a triangle instead of a square. It can easily be done with any starting shape.

Sarah illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Elance below where she includes the additional version of it formed with a triangle as Step 1.
