How to draw CARO

Zentangle pattern: Caro. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. Lucy created Caro in memory of the late CZT, Caroline McNamara.

I did not know of Caroline McNamara so Lucy has the floor …

Lucy writes,

I designed the fragment in remembrance of Caroline McNamara CZT, who recently died in a car accident in Ireland.

This was a big shock to everyone, and in the first hours and days after hearing the news, the most appropriate thing for her fellow tanglers to do, to address the tragedy and the associated grief, was to tangle. I knew Caroline only a little – we had met twice and kept in touch on Facebook and by email. I did know her enough to know she was an amazing CZT who arranged many events for other CZT’s to meet up, network and tangle together. Many others knew her better than me and could say more in remembrance.

I didn’t know her well enough to know her favourite colours or tangles, and she wasn’t a CZT that had published any of her own tangles, so when it came to tangling something in remembrance of Caroline, initially I wasn’t sure what tangles to pick. I wondered how to honour her.

Then it came to me that I could design a tangle for her. The thought of coming up with a whole new tangle was daunting, so I settled on a fragment as this seemed achievable. I knew her well enough to know she had a huge heart and she loved nature and Ireland. These were the three things that led to the fragment design. It is a triangular fragment that contains three hearts, arranged to look like a shamrock.

I wanted to name the tangle after her, without it being too direct, and initially thought of Namara, this being part of her surname. While exploring different name options I was looking up name meanings and discovered that the first part of her name, Caro can mean ‘dear’ or ‘beloved’. When I read that, I knew that it had to be the name of the fragment.

Each time I have used the fragment, it made me think of Caroline and the happy memories of the times when we met.

Thank you Lucy, Caro is a beautiful tribute. Our sincere condolences for their loss to Caroline’s family and friends.

Lucy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Caro below and includes three beautiful tile examples as she describes: “The top tile shows Caro in reticulum R-E3 (in the Primer). The middle 3Z tile shows Caro as a fill for Tripoli (R-F2 in the Primer). The bottom tile shows the Caro fragment in reticulum RF-3 (in the Primer) [Suzanne McNeill’s Intersection]“.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
