How to draw ROSONE

Zentangle pattern: Rosone. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Today’s tangle is from Italian CZT Susanna Redaelli and Rosone is her first on the site.

Rosone means “rose window” in Italian and indeed Susanna’s inspiration for Rosone was a detail in a rose window in “the central facade of the Milan cathedral“.

According to Wikipedia,

“Rose window is often used as a generic term applied to a circular window, but is especially used for those found in churches of the Gothic architectural style that are divided into segments by stone mullions and tracery. The name “rose window” was not used before the 17th century and according to the Oxford English Dictionary, among other authorities, comes from the English flower name rose.”

I wasn’t able to find a royalty-free image of the Cathedral’s rose window to display here, however this image from Shutterstock shows Susanna’s inspiration.

Susanna introduces herself,

I’m an artist, painter and interior decorator of Milanese origin. I specialize in ceramic decoration, clay modeling and trompe l’oeil.

I’m also CZT17 and I work both as a volunteer with elders in hospice and with children at primary school. Periodically I offer private workshop to adults.

Susanna illustrates how to draw Rosone here (scroll down the page) on her blog, Tangle Art Milano, by presenting it as a simple fragment. She demonstrates Rosone in a grid and two other non-grid configurations with variations of fills and embellishments. (Click on the image to enlarge and download.) Susanna lists her class schedule here.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share!
