How to draw SHIRA

Today Dutch CZT Marguerite Samama shares her Shira ribbon-style tangle with us, and it’s her first on the site.

Recently Marguerite shared her delightful zenbutton tutorial with us and you can learn more about her there.

She writes,

This is based on a border I found in an old album of Italian Bel canto arias.

I found it a while back and it is the first pattern I deconstructed. I was pretty thrilled and showed it to my teenage daughter Shira. She thought it was very boring and childish, like everything else ‘zentangly’. Yet when I was wondering what I should call it, she immediately said: well Shira of course. Which made me laugh once more about teenage ambivalence!

Since my daughter’s name means verse/song in Hebrew, the name is actually pretty appropriate. 🙂

Rabbit hole! Bel canto, we learn, “is a style of singing as well as a type of opera.”

Bel canto (Italian for “beautiful singing” or “beautiful song”), along with a number of similar constructions (“bellezze del canto”/”bell’arte del canto”), is a term relating to Italian singing. It has several different meanings and is subject to a wide variety of interpretations.

The words were not associated with a “school” of singing until the middle of the 19th century, when writers in the early 1860s used it nostalgically to describe a manner of singing that had begun to wane around 1830.

For those interested in investigating bel canto arias further, check out this thread including a list of “arias from Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti, the great Bel canto composers” on talkclassical.com. Happy listening!

Like most ribbon-style tangles, Shira can also be tangled in back-to-back rows or columns to fill a section with equal effectiveness.

Marguerite illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Shira below and she features it and variations in three beautiful example Zentangle® tiles.

Looks like a winner for me too! Not only do we get wonderful patterns to work on here on Linda’s site, but also interesting snippets of information at the top of the page like the words about Bel Canto today. Thanks Marguerite and Thanks Linda!
PS I love my Infinity bracelet, which arrived recently from Jenny Peruzzo…..it could almost be a symbol for tangling couldn’t it!
