Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen shares her pretty ribbon-style Ilac tangle with us today.
Last month Ria shared her Tupuk and Tupi tangles, and Ilac is her ninth on the site.
“Since I discovered Zentangle® art I became immediately a real addict. When I open my eyes in the morning, I see patterns, everywhere.”
Ilac was inspired by this fabric, and Ria explains “The new tangle’s name is ILAC (I love African colours).”
Ria writes,
I like to tangle and to create new patterns, especially when the weather is bad and I have to stay inside.
Many times I’m using colours on my tiles and I am always looking for nice combinations, in magazines, in shops, on the Internet…
African textiles have inspired me to make Zimba and now again I discovered another beautiful African fabric…based on the well known Scottish pattern “Paisley”.
This tangle is family of Flux and Cruffle and can be used as a border or as a garland on the tile. Many variations are possible, I have included three of them.
Ilac is not exactly the same as on the fabric, I have made it a bit easier and it is a pleasant and relaxing shape to draw.
Ilac is fun to tangle with those curly tails linking up to each other. And there are so many possibilities for varying with fills and embellished “tails” as Ria shows us.
Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ilac below and she includes some written instructions to help. (Note: in Ria’s written step 3 “guirlande” = garland/ribbon.) In the bottom right, Ria demonstrates Ilac in a tile with the Zentangle-original ‘Nzepple.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
