We’re speeding towards 2018 and I’m definitely not ready, I feel like I’m still back in September somewhere. Dragging my feet …

Today’s pretty, festive Fili tangle comes to us from Hong Kong CZT Yuenman Wong and this is her first on the site.

Yuenman introduces herself,

I draw Zentangle around 3 years. When I was searching some pattern for design my ceramic, I found Zentangle in the internet.

I felt Zentangle look like interesting. So I bought the Zentangle Kit and started to draw Zentangle.

Last year, I joined the Certified Zentangle Teacher Training in Taipei and became a Certified Zentangle Teacher.

For me, Zentangle is not only let me relax but also realizing the friend of different nationalities. May be that is the reason why I still draw Zentangle.

The international friends we meet in our Zentangle community certainly is a wonderful bonus of this amazing art form.

Yuenman named her tangle Fili, and notes it means “Dazzling Day”. She explains her inspiration:

This pattern is inspired by Christmas and New Year’s celebration.

In Hong Kong, you can see the Christmas lights on different buildings along the Victoria Harbour on Christmas.

On New Year’s Eve party, Victoria Harbor has a musical fireworks show.

Of course I had to check out Victoria Harbour and learned about its famous light show from Wikipedia:

A Symphony of Lights is a daily light and sound show in Hong Kong. It is the world’s largest permanent light and sound show according to Guinness World Records.

The show is organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and is displayed every night with good weather at 8 pm Hong Kong Time (UTC+8). An orchestration of music, decoration lights, laser light displays, and pyrotechnic fireworks, the multimedia light and sound show lasts for around 14 minutes and was conceptualised, created, and installed by Laservision. …

Special pyrotechnic fireworks are added to the show on the rooftop of participating buildings on both sides of the harbour or stages off at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. They are used on special events or holidays, like Chinese New Year and Christmas.”

If you click the image below you can view the larger version this panoramic view of Victoria Harbour taken on Chinese New Year. Impressive indeed.

So, having enjoyed this little Hong Kong travelogue, let’s get back to Yuenman’s lovely Fili tangle.

I use two elements from Christmas lights and Fireworks to design the pattern.

I use the fireworks structure to design curves. Then I draw a little light bulb at the end of curve.

When you start to draw it, you will feel each step look like you are enjoying the fireworks show.

While I found Fili easy to tangle and I love those energetic little lights, I was following Yuenman’s steps exactly and when it came to the auras of Step 5 I was challenged. I seemed to run out of space. After a few experiments, I discovered if I added the aura immediately after Step 3, and then moved on from there, the end result was more pleasing to me. For my example I added a touch of graphite to the “light bulbs” but I bet you’ll be tempted to add color to those details for an even more festive result.

Yuenman illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Fili below and she features it in a lovely monotangle where her shading gives an embossed look to her tile. Her tile demonstrates more potential forms to create Fili and they have more space around and within them for the auras.

I thought an enlargement of Yuenman’s Step 5 auras might be helpful. You’ll note it’s more or less a continuous line, but not always. The aura seems to give Fili a snowflake kind of quality.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.
