How to draw ABUNDIES

Zentangle pattern: Abundies. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comAbundies is a new tangle from Swiss CZT Hanny Waldburger and it’s her third on the site.

Hanny shows how to draw Abundies as a single motif and I often have trouble deciding if this type of pattern qualifies as a tangle for the Zentangle® Method. As Maria described to me in a discussion about what she considers a tangle, a tangle isn’t a repetition of a drawing it’s a repetition of a stroke. “One simple stroke in many places, then a different stroke next to the others…etc.”

Many times a pattern is a single motif which usually makes it something to draw rather than an overall, organically growing tangle. Many floral or medallion-type patterns fall into this category and thus are not tangles.

Many of our tangles are only one or two strokes that repeat over and over. We put a lot of time and thought into deconstructing familiar and seemingly complex patterns down to their essentials. This allows you to get into Zentangle’s process without trying to draw something.

However, I saw a way to draw Abundies in a ribbon or border style so it became the repetition of a stroke and that helped seal the deal for including it here in Zentangle-land.

Hanny explains how this tangle came about:

Following a spontaneous impulse one night I was drawing curved lines without any idea or intention, something that always helps me to slow down from the ‘speed’ of the working day. At some point, there was a form and suddenly a whole crowd of different variations of these small shells or capsules filled my sketchbook pages.”

Hanny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Abundies here on her blog.
