How to draw PEA-FEA

Zentangle pattern: Pea-Fea. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comOver the years I’ve had several peacock-related patterns submitted for consideration. However in each case the patterns didn’t qualify as tangles because they were almost literal attempts to draw a peacock feather instead of being an overall, non-objective pattern. And as we well know, Zentangle® is not about drawing “some thing“.

As Zentangle co-founder Maria Thomas once explained to me in an exchange about what makes a tangle, Zentangle is not about the repetition of a drawing it’s about the repetition of a stroke. “One simple stroke in many places, then a different stroke next to the others…etc.”

CZT Amelie Liao’s lovely Pea-Fea is the first that meets the qualifications of a tangle, and it’s really a good one. [Remember Amelie’s Loop from a few weeks ago?]

Amelie writes that her inspiration for Pea-Fea was a pattern she noticed on a wallet which appealed to her as “very simple, and beautiful!

This is one very versatile tangle pattern and Amelie explores many interesting ways to play with it. You can draw the motifs adjacent to each other, or offset them. Connect them up, or space them out. Change their direction. Draw them around shapes or even fit them within grids.

Amelie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Pea-Fea below with a simple variation. Her beautiful Zentangle includes the Zentangle-original Diva Dance tangle and it fits so well as a background here.

In Amelie’s next examples, along with several more variations she also shows two grid-based versions — the regular diamond grid here in the top right …
