How to draw GARLIC CLOVES

Zentangle pattern: Garlic ClovesToday’s Garlic Cloves tangle looks like one possible result from Lesson 1 of Simone Bischoff’s line drawing lessons. Simone originally posted Lesson 1 on April 20, 2011, and all six lessons were featured on TanglePatterns last fall.

Danish tangler and art teacher Jacquelien Bredenoord published the steps to Garlic Cloves in June 2012.

Whether the two are connected is pure conjecture on my part, but in any case Garlic Cloves is a very cool pattern worthy of being included in our repertoire and an excellent simple tangle to start off the week.

Jacquelien used this drawing lesson with her primary school students so suffice it to say it’s an easy and fun tangle pattern to draw. It also lends itself to Zentangle®-inspired variations as it invites the addition of color. Because you start with random dots, this tangle turns out different each time you draw it.

Garlic Cloves makes use of Zentangle’s aura technique and Jacquelien illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Garlic Cloves here on her blog.

She summarizes, courtesy of Google Translate and my Zentangle-related “edits”,

  1. Scatter some dots randomly around your tile or section of a tile
  2. Make a stroke connecting two adjacent dots
  3. Add 2-5 arcs (auras) on each side of the first stroke “Looks like garlic cloves!
  4. From the end of the first “clove”, draw a new line connecting to an adjacent dot and add arcs on both sides.
  5. Continue in the same way until the dots are all connected
  6. Sometimes you might have to fill in the space to the underlying “garlic” shape with additional strokes.
  7. If desired, add emphasis with shading near the dark dots.

Garlic Cloves looks great at any scale, whether Zentangle-sized as in my example or much larger where you can also add fills in some of the spaces created by your strokes. Or color as I mentioned before. Have fun!

  • Hi,
Thanks for linking to my blog. I’m the Danish art teacher who made the visual tutorial, but I found the inspiration at kidsartists.blogspot.com, Jacquelien Bredenoord’s blog – and linked to her in my blog post. My blog is http://www.FruBilledkunst.dk.
    Jacquelien Bredenoord is from Nederland.

    Best regards from Denmark,
    FruBilledkunst / Tina

BTW thanks for your wonderfull site 🙂

I love this one. Not only do I liked the way it Looks, but it’s so enjoyable to draw! Thank you, Tina for the step-out!

    Going to try it today.

  • Melena

Just used this in my tile for today. I’ve used it before, but Linda put this up on her Tangle Refresher 130. This reminded me to use it again. Very fun. A good tangle. Thank you!
