How to draw KISS

Zentangle pattern: KissIn consideration of all the new tanglers joining us, I thought we’d learn a super easy tangle today — Kiss, by tangler Katie Booth and it’s her first tangle pattern on the site.

She tells us how her tangle came about: “I was playing around with the Diva’s challenge #198 to ‘Keep It Simple, Silly’. I was attempting to do the new pattern Ha-nuka. It morphed into this tile. It’s a really simple grid pattern with crossed figure eights.”

Kiss is a pretty grid-based tangle and Katie writes that she enjoys drawing it using a warped grid. That’s the term I use for a grid that uses curved or wavy lines instead of the usual straight lines, and many tangles can be drawn on either type of grid. If you’d like some tips on drawing grids, here’s a tutorial with a free downloadable PDF. BTW there are many more tutorials on the site: visit the TUTORIALS tab on the pink alphabetic menu bar.

For my example of Kiss here, I used a standard square grid but then I played with making the centers of the figure 8’s land in different places within each grid space. This gives a bit of a sense of movement and makes Kiss a very playful motif. A touch of shading adds a little depth too.

Katie’s from Austin, the capital of the Lone Star State of Texas, and she introduces herself:

I recently took up Zentangle® and have been drawing nonstop! … I’m so glad to have found Zentangle. My mind can be a very loud place and this is one of the few things that quiets things. I never felt very artistic, but after tangling for the past 3 months, more things seem possible … I have even branched out to ZIA’s and even watercolors.

Zentangle does indeed open many creative doors. It’s totally magical!

Katie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kiss here on her blog and demonstrates several different ways to vary her tangle. Update April 2023: Katie’s blog appears to be MIA so until that situation is corrected, here for you convenience are her steps instructions for her tangle.

I love this new tangle, warped looks so cool, thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Nancy! What a surprise to see your comment listed here! I know that Jewel Knofler had been using zentangles in class. I have been tangling as part of my hobby shortly after I retired. So relaxing and fun.

Hope you are well and happy.

Katie and Linda. Thank you to both of you ladies for letting us enjoy and experience KISS. I drew this tangle using a wavy grid. It turned out great. Thank you very much. What a joy Zentangle brings to my life. Some of my children gave me tangling supplies for Christmas (I will still love the others!) thank you Linda for your positive contribution to so many lives–you touch more lives than you probably will ever know. Happy New Year to all! Nancy

Really like this Katie…love the way the flower is drawn with 8’s and the curved lines in the grid. Also, the fun little petal part you add is fun. Thanks for sharing this. Something a little different and sure to be one of my favorites.
