Helen Brown is a tangler from South West Australia and Forest is her first pattern on the site.
“I moved to Bridgetown, a country town (where we live amongst the forests), from Perth the capital city of Western Australia 12 months ago.
I have found the Zentangle® art form completely addictive. It has also led me to try drawing other things too. I used to work as a draftsperson a long time ago when we had to actually draw on a drawing board, and I thought that I could only draw straight lines, until I discovered Zentangle.“
Forest is a grid-based tangle with some pretty details and shading brings out the best in it. Tip: you can swap Steps 1 and 2 around if you are determined to get the square exactly in the center (who, me??).
Helen illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Forest below and features it in her lovely monotangle where she uses what I call a warped grid. Nice effect! BTW if you’d like some tips for drawing grids, here’s a tutorial that might help you out and it includes a free PDF download.

Great patterm, love it on a grid and off.
Thanks Beth glad you like it! I prefer the curvy grid line with Forest. I will have to try it without a grid.
I agree with Beth – this a personal favourite 🙂
