Bumpkens is a very pretty Autumn tangle shared with us by Beth Snoderly, and her timing is impeccable with Hallowe’en later this week and Autumn in full fettle in this hemisphere.
I loved drawing this tangle pattern, but then I love all of them!Grids and heart shapes, what could be better? Beth demonstrates two ways of drawing Bumpkenz with the second using a rounded, more “pumpkin-like” shape in keeping with the Autumn/Hallowe’en time of year. Also a wonderfully abstracted Japanese lantern, don’t you think? I used the heart-shaped version in my example.
“I got the idea from the old kitchen wallpaper we took down. Funny, it keeps turning up, so I had to tangle it. I have two variations included. One with a rounded bottom and the other with a pointed (heart) bottom. I find both to be quick and fun to tangle. I usually either shade them as in this example or fill in the background with pen.“
Beth illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Bumpkenz below and includes some variations for you to use. There are lots of potential variations with this one.
Beth also sent along three lovely examples featuring both ways of drawing Bumpkenz for you to enjoy, along with her wishes (and I second them): “Happy Holidays!”

I really like this pattern. With some different shading, it would make wonderful valentines.
What a great new pattern…I am partial to “curves” and this is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Very pretty tangle Beth! I can’t wait to try it!!
Beautiful pattern Beth. I love the variations (flowers for spring and summer, hearts for winter and pumpkins for fall). Just perfect! Thank you for sharing.
Very pretty! I like it a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks everyone! I am so glad you like it! Enjoy!
Hi Beth. I just found this pattern now and love it. Being that it is close to Valentine’s Day, I drew it with hearts. Thanks for the step-out variations!
