Blankett is a tangle pattern from Canadian tangler Judy Murphy who has previously shared her Starawn and Love Line tangles with us.
Judy writes Blankett “reminds me of a homemade quilt. Not perfect but well loved …” And Judy’s simple grid-based tangle has so much potential for variations. Curved lines, different fills are two ways that leap to mind.
In practicing Blankett for my example, I discovered two interesting things about drawing it. The first — in Step 3 rather than drawing the inner square, I found it easier to thicken the lines (add weight by double stroking, as Joanne Fink would say) rather than drawing the inner square and filling between them.
The second thing I learned was that Blankett has more character (“Not perfect, but well loved”) when you draw the lines in Step 4 just like Judy demonstrates — in each individual grid square. In my obsession for efficiency I tried drawing them straight across adjacent pairs but you don’t get the same effect. Still, if you want a less casual look then by all means … A little shading finishes Blankett nicely.
Here are Judy’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Blankett, and her Zentangle-inspired example with a slight variation.
