How to draw Y-FUL POWER

Zentangle pattern: Y-Ful Power. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. This striking and somewhat challenging woven tangle pattern comes from a tangler known by her online name as Shoshi and she’s from the fascinating county of Devon in the UK. Y-Ful Power is her first on the site.

I’m about to digress … Robert and I had a fun trip to Devon many years ago when we were visiting his family in the Midlands and rented a Mini for a week’s touring. I wanted to see Torquay, home of one of my childhood favorite mystery writers, Agatha Christie. The trip was especially memorable for a hair-raising adventure. One night on our way into a small town for dinner from the even smaller fishing village we were staying in along the coast, somehow in our little Mini we strayed onto the Royal Tank Regiment artillery range. No GPS in those days. And OMG, they were practicing! Ka-boom!!!! Hair-raising!!! Memorable trip – and fabulous fish and chips (twice) – and probably a pint too. 🙂

Okay, back to Shoshi and her Y-Ful Power tangle. She writes,

“I discovered Zentangle® nine months ago and particularly enjoy creating Zentangle-inspired art … I also work with paper, acrylics and mixed media, and other forms of creativity.

I have called it ‘Y-Ful Power’ which is a pun on ‘Eiffel Tower’ and also includes the letter Y, being a trefoil design. This pattern, with variations, crops up quite frequently if you keep your eyes open, and I think it makes an excellent fill.”

Shoshi has done a very clever deconstruction of this pattern. Y-Ful Power starts with an inked dot grid that “disappears into the pattern as it develops, as is the case with Huggins and other similar designs that start with a dot grid.

The grid that begins Y-Ful Power is not at all what you might expect. There are eyebrows involved too 😉 You’ll see what I mean when you visit Shoshi’s step-by-step instructions and lovely examples with interesting variations here on her blog.

As Shoshi says, lots of potential for embellishment with this one.

  • Thank you Linda, nice to see my first tangle on the Tangle Patterns site! Thanks for a lovely welcome and an excellent write-up too. Nice to know that you have visited our neck of the woods (we live not a million miles from Torquay) but sorry you had such an explosive time of it!! We’re generally a pretty peaceable lot here in Devon… We have fish and chips from the van that visits a neighbouring village every Thursday – best I’ve ever tasted.

Thanks for posting these instructions Shoshi and Linda. I love this tangle and have tried in vain to recreate it after seeing it on your Flickr page.

I’ll be using it a lot!

I will tangle up some tiles full of Y-Ful Power over a green water-color wash, then add some well-placed red orbs and white dots. My 2022 Christmas cards are all set to go. Thanks for the inspiration.
