Scrolled Feather comes to us from Australian Helen Williams and it’s her first tangle pattern on the site.
Helen lives in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, named for the Yarra River. According to Wikipedia the Yarra River “originates approximately 90 kilometres east of the City of Melbourne and flows towards it and out into Port Phillip Bay. The Yarra Valley is a popular day-trip and tourist area, featuring a range of natural features and agricultural produce … and is host to a thriving wine-growing industry.”
This lovely tangle was another one I had to practice many times before I was satisfied with it. In the end I resorted to “doing it upside down” from Helen’s steps and that seemed to get the auras creating the “feathers” to work best for me.
Helen introduces herself:
“I live in Australia with my family (and many chickens, cows, cats, 2 little piggies and a dog) on a small farm. … A few months ago I was taking a break from another project, surfing the web, and discovered Zentangle®. I was enthralled and have not spent a day since without a pen in my hand (all other projects have been pushed aside!). I love to include tangles with flower images in unexpected ways and experiment with the different ways I can use pattern designs. My beautiful, natural surroundings provide a lot of inspiration for this.”
Helen illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Scrolled Feather here on her blog.

Update 09/29/2012: Helen has added a 3-minute video demonstrating how to draw Scroll Feather and posted several variations here.

Thank you Helen. This is lovely.
Wow! Thank you for the wonderful instructions.
I found your video demonstration very helpful! Thank you!
I love the elegance of this tangle. I hope to use it in the future.
Don’t know why, but I just can’t get the hang of this one. After doing the s-shaped scrolls when I add the next line down from the back of a higher scroll to the lower scroll, it is supposed to end at the “apex” or that little crux point in the bottom of the lower scroll, but the apex isn’t in the right spot to make the same inner shape as in the video, so then when trying to add the auru-like lines inside that shape, they are out of whack because it’s the wrong shape. I must not be curving the initial scrolled lines in the right directions???? I must have some strange glitch in my brain, I’ve never not been able to do a tangle before.??? The Tangle is so beautiful but I just can’t make it happen. Will stop for now and try again fresh some day. Does anyone else have this problem?
Beautiful
Thank you
I definetly will try this. It is so beautiful.
Always loved your work and the sounds of your home-farm. Thanks
so nice thank you
Helen, I love this tangle! Thanks to your husband, John for recording the video! I loved the rooster in the background, and didn’t think you had a lisp, just a wonderful accent! Thank you for not giving up! I look forward to seeing more of your lovely tangles!
