How to draw NORTHSHIRE

Jody has contributed more than a dozen great tangles for your creative enjoyment, most recently Zanglers.

She explains how she discovered Northshire and gives some tips for tangling it,

The inspiration for this pattern comes from a bookstore in Saratoga, NY. I’m calling the pattern Northshire. This is where I first learned about Zentangle® 5 years ago when I stumbled across The Joy of Zentangle by Suzanne McNeill, Sandy Steen Bartholomew and Marie Browning. I had the pleasure of meeting Suzanne at ZenAgain 2016 and thanking her for the introduction (and snagging an autograph for my book).

I’ve included a photo of the inspiration for this pattern. It is the cover of a memo pad. I kick myself for not buying it as there were a couple of patterns in the corners of some of the inside pages. I went back to get it and of course it was gone. It was after all a Great Price…

I will admit the first couple of tries with this may seem like it doesn’t want to come together.

My advice is to think of a long stretched out backwards C as you are drawing the first shape and then mirror that to complete the first column. The second column starts around the half way point of the first column.

I also included a ‘close up’ of the bumped out part. The trick is to start these auras with the outside lines and each ‘V’ gets a little straighter and a little lower as you get closer to the middle line. It creates that squished illusion.

I love how Jody’s inspirational notebook cover has a trompe-l’oeil effect, first the turquoise waves jump out and then the Northshire pattern forming the waves emerges. I admit to needing more practice on this one but it’s worth the effort and I’m keeping at it because Jody’s versions are SO much better!

Jody illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Northshire below where she features it in three beautifully composed Zentangle tiles. In the last tile, “I have used a Sakura Glaze Pen with some water colors to see how that would look.
