How to draw POD FLOWER

Australian artist Helen Williams has been off the radar for a while as sometimes happens and life “events” take over. So we’re delighted she’s back blogging occasionally again and she shares her Pod Flower tangle with us.

Pod Flower shares similarities with a bunch of tangles but I know how you all love the floral themes. If I recall correctly off the top of my head 4 Corners and Vercut were among the first to use the alternating rice shapes in a grid as its basis.

I took a bit of license with shading and inking for my example of Pod Flower, I liked the 3D, almost-chiseled effect it gave.

Helen illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Pod Flower here on her blog. Helen includes a wonderful range of variations to explore as well as showing how it works “On a wonky grid with a bit of randomising thrown in.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share!

As is true of all of Helen’s patterns, Pod Flower is beautiful, no matter how it’s tangled 🙂

I very much like making my own greeting cards, and am always coming here to your site, Linda, to get my design/tangle ideas; this one is going to be done in my favorite thing to do–brilliant colored (this time, Pod) flowers and a lot of black-on-white swirls and curliques–and sent to a very dear friend whom I don’t get to see often enough.

I always love Helen Williams’ patterns! So grateful to see this one – it will be fun to play with! The variations look interesting and provide food for thought and ideas for other tangles as well! Thanks Helen and Linda!

  • I love it! It’s easy to draw and elegant. Thank you! And thank you for all of the interesting variations. Fun!
