How to draw THREEZEE

Zentangle pattern: Threezee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.ThreeZee is our super easy (eZee?) Monday tangle and it’s a right fun little character to play with.

ThreeZee comes from Monroe, Washington CZT Lynn Mead and it’s her fifth tangle on the site. Be sure to check them all out.

She writes that ThreeZee simply popped into her head:

“Something interesting happened to me recently. I was busy drawing when an image suddenly popped into my head. It had nothing to do with what I was drawing but it demanded to be put down on paper.

It is a simple motif that is made up of three Zs. This little guy gave me such happy feelings that I did a quick step-out and called it ThreeZee.”

I think it could also be called ZNN … and I love that ThreeZee already has stoppers on the pointy bits 🙂

When she shared ThreeZee with CZT colleagues before she had a chance “to play with it” herself, several of them explored it and came up with interesting ways to link the motifs together. One such exploration creates a star shape in the center. This is what is known as a meta-pattern in Zentangle terminology:

“An image that results from drawing two or more tangles touching or near each other so their combination reveals a new pattern or shape.”

Lynn’s initial steps with ThreeZee illustrate it as random, free-form motif which I’ve used in my example, she also shows it as a ribbon or border-style tangle in what she humorously labels a “chorus line”. In another exploration she shows ThreeZee in a hexagon grid.

Lynn illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing ThreeZee here on her blog along with her colleagues’ tiles.

I hope you give ThreeZee a try. As you can see it’s very versatile and I think you will find it will make you happy too. What can be better than that?

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your comment helps motivate them to continue to share!
