Tangles involving hearts are always popular and today we add another lovely one to our Zentangle® resource.
Tangler and novelist Jenna Black is back with her easy Cross-Ur-Heart tangle, her fourth one on the site.
Jenna developed Cross-Ur-Heart while experimenting with hearts and contour lines.
She writes,
There are tons of options for embellishing this one after step 4. It can be done with a simple cross in the middle to make four hearts, or you can make more.
On the gray tile I’ve submitted, the one in the lower left was started with an asterisk shape instead of a cross.
The ones on the top left and lower right use fewer hearts on the outer layer and different embellishments.
It would also be possible to add more layers of the hearts, though I personally prefer how it looks with just the two.
Cross-Ur-Heart develops from the center outwards in a radial fashion and can be extended as far as you like. For my example I stuck with Jenna’s basic version of Cross-Ur-Heart and with a touch of shading it has a pretty, puffy dimension to it.
Jenna illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Cross-Ur-Heart below where she includes the gray tile referred to above with examples and variations.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

Oh yes, now the thing I like about this is that although it has hearts as its structure it doesn’t have to end up looking like hearts – which I’m not that partial too. Great when shaded too. Looking forward to using this!
I’m not terribly partial to obvious heart shapes either, so I’m with you! Hope you have fun with it.
I love ‘heart’ patterns and I love this one. Easy and fun, looks exotic! I will definitely use this one, thanks Jenna.
You’re welcome! Have fun with it.
Great heart that doen’t look like a heart. Will be a fun one to use.
Hope you enjoy playing with it!
Very nicely done. I wondered how the 2nd layer came about. A brace, and a “V”. How sweet. Reminds me of meringue!
I see the resemblance. Strangely, Meringue is a pattern I’ve never really mastered. I might have to go back and give it another try.
Beautiful pattern! I love hearts. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you like it.
Very nice pattern and really relaxing to draw, thank you very much!
You’re welcome. have fun with it!
OH, what a wonderful way to start out the day! Couldn’t wait to find my pen & pencil. Thank you for a really pretty and interesting tangle. You Rock!!
Thanks! I’m looking forward to seeing what people do with it!
Love this pattern as well as the other patterns you have on the site Jenna. I’m going to use it on a traveling tile..
Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! Glad you like it!
Lovely tangle. There are so many possibilities. Thanks for sharing.
This is lovely!
Love it.
I have done 4 cross-ur-heart and find it to be very open to creativity and imagination. I like it a lot, thank you!
Love the tangle. I’m going to try it on a black tile. Thanks.
Have used cross-ur-Heart a few times. Always “dresses up” the tile.
Really enjoyed doing this. Love the repeating lines, so relaxing and very pretty with or without shading. Thank you!
I love having tangles that look great without shading, and this one definitely appeals to me 🙂 I love the basic version and how rhythmic it feels drawing the lines. It’s easy for me to get into a flow state drawing this tangle 🙂
