How to draw RAINKING

Rainking is a pattern deconstructed by YuRu Chen‘s friend and Zentangle® classmate Leona Shih, both from Taiwan.

Their class homework was to design a grid tangle and Leona came up with Rainking, so named by Leona because “on rainy days the road is full of all kinds of umbrellas triggered by the rain“.

Leona illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Rainking below.

Here in two monotangles Leona features Rainking where different orientations of the same basic tangle fragment produce additional overall designs.

The terms fragment (formerly called grid seed) and reticula (grids) are introduced in Chapter 7 of the new Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1 where Maria includes several pages of examples of both (154 square fragments, 66 triangular/tripoli-like fragments, and 45 round fragments together with 30 different reticula) for us to explore. Throw in mirroring and rotating fragments together with all of the above examples, the possibilities are mind boggling.

  • Melena

Great tangle! I just tried it out in my sketch book and it was very easy to do. This will be a fun one. Thank you for sharing this with us Leona.

Beautiful pattern, thank you for posting it, Linda.

I too LOVE this tangle Leona! It is so versatile. Easy as easy can be or add the different orientations and border as one wishes. Thank you so much for sharing 🙂

I would like to add, I love how you named it Leona. A little story behind a tangle can perhaps help some of us to come up with new tangles based on a memory, or an event. I find that very interesting. And, yesterdays 96x was inspired by Linda from that beautiful, artful wrought iron design. WOW, it is mind boggling how many possibilities are all around us for creating new and exciting tangles. 🙂

  • The whole concept of the reticula and fragments is so engaging. These two words deserve to become ‘tags’ on tangles that exhibit these characteristics.

Hi Bette, many thanks for your suggestion. I gave quite a bit of thought to that when I first got my copy of the PRIMER but in the end I’ve decided to keep things simple because many tangles on the site are composed of grids and thus “seeds” and are already tagged as grid-based tangles. I rather prefer the simpler words myself, the same as tangleation/variation. In my mind the original words are self-explanatory. Reticula and fragment, not so much. IMHO. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind when I’ve got nothing else to do and feel like editing every tangle on the site 😉

Leona. I love Rainking! It is beautiful! I live in a desert so we do not see much rain and very few umbrellas but I am going to draw Rainking today so bring on the rain! Thank you for sharing. Also, I like your name. My Mother’s middle name is Leona. Nancy

  • Margaret

Really love the tangleations possible with this tangle! Bravo 🙂

  • Very cool. I’ve been playing with fragments lately, so will be fun to play with. Thanks for the share.

  • Maria

    It’s so cool and fun!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a wonderful pattern with so many possibilities!
