It’s about time for another grid-based tangle and Whimriph is from Florida CZT Linda Underdonk. She’s based in a community known as The Villages and this is her first tangle on the site.
Linda came up with this tangle at her Zentangle® teacher training seminar. Here she introduces herself:
I was a teacher for 32 years in Broward County, Florida – Fort Lauderdale area – and have taught all grade levels from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The subject areas I taught were music, dance, and English, mostly high school.
Another passion of mine is Sweet Adelines four-part harmony a capella singing.
My CZT class was 13 and we finished on the 13th of the month in 2013.
Although we’re now living in Palm Beach County, Robert and I lived in Fort Lauderdale for 23 years so we know Broward (pronounced Brow’-ard) very well. Lots of great memories there … and back to our tangle of the day …
Whimriph starts out like the Zentangle-original Florz, a very basic two-step tangle, and goes from there.
I was in the mood to do something more with the open white spaces in the basic Whimriph, so I embellished my example quite a bit. I started by doing a slight variation in the center row by reversing the fills of Steps 2 and 3 just to see how it would look. Then I added orbs at the open grid intersections, and finally I added some graphite to the rice shapes.
Linda illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Whimriph below and shows it in a monotangle. Remember that with pretty much any grid-based tangle you can warp your grid with curved lines to create another look with the same tangle.

String Suggestions
It’s often possible to enlarge a basic tangle and use it for a String.
For example a single grid tangle square (or “seed”, or "fragment") can be penciled on your tile then you can tangle in the sections created. As Bijou says, “Sometimes I even leave a section blank; which is occasionally my best choice!”
This simple idea makes all kinds of Strings possible.
And remember, in Zentangle there’s no right-side-up!
