Exis is another tangle pattern from Jennifer Hohensteiner, an expat American living in Germany who recently shared her Lichen tangle with us.
“The name Exis is a play on the letter X which I see as the basis of this grid pattern. Even if it’s kind of a warped X, a ‘high slung’ X and a ‘low slung’ X. Also, when the pattern is complete, one of many patterns that emerge is a lattice of interlocking Xs. The finished pattern seems to me to have a number of variations lurking inside it that could be brought out. I tried to show that in my variations but I think there is much more that could be done with it.”
For a change of pace, I’ve used a very bare bones drawing of Exis with one small tweak for my example. (I know, shocking isn’t it?) Exis looks great even just like this. But wait! There’s more …
Exis is another very versatile tangle and in Jennifer’s steps for drawing it below, she demonstrates a bunch of different ways you can play with it. I’m particularly fond of her last example.

Ohhhhh…I REALLY like Exis!!! Thank you, Jennifer, for this great new tangle, and thank you, Linda, for featuring it!
Love this! it is so simple yet it has so many variations.
Thank you
…and I am particularly fond of the cute way you added my name to the step-out ! Thanks, Linda!
Thank you for another great tangle pattern. As usual when a new pattern comes out, I was playing around with it and for a brief moment it seemed like I was creating a new tangle. I did both the high and low X’s in the same grid box and suddenly it appeared . . . . . Nvelope! Kind of like taking a different road to get to the same place. Too funny.
Love this Tangle and the variations. It looks like several Tangles. Thank you for sharing!
Jennifer I really like that one. It is so flexible! 🙂
This tangle is great! So easy and so complex results (or not) at the same time. I could expend hours playing with it. Thank you Jennifer
