How to draw HEARTSTRINGS

Zentangle pattern: HeartstringsHere’s our last Valentine-related tangle, Heartstrings by Helen Williams.

It may look complicated but Heartstrings is very easy to draw, one stroke at a time. The key here is to take your time and make deliberate strokes.

Shading makes all the difference to this tangle. By adding just a touch of shading Heartstrings becomes puffy and very dimensional, and the shading is so much fun. I often have enough graphite left on my blender (tortillion) to do the job.

Zentangle pattern: HeartstringsI also played with this variation where I drew the heart shapes “upside down” in every other column and that looks interesting too.

Helen illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Heartstrings here on her blog.

Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all! May everyone’s lives be filled with sweetness and love.

  • Thanks, Linda. I love, love your variation!

I love how those construction lines disappear into this pattern, particularly in the centre of the hearts. I had to do a double take the first time I saw Helen’s hearts on the completed step. I love the way Helen articulates her ideas. I think I visit her blog and scroll through her deconstructions second only to using this site.

Thanks to both Linda and Helen!
