How to draw GROOVY

Zentangle pattern: Groovy. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Groovy is Atlanta tangler Eden Hunt’s first tangle pattern on the site. Queue Simon and Garfunkel … ” ? slow down, you movin’ too fast ? ” – very Zentangle®, don’t you think?

Eden explains that Groovy was inspired by “a delicious raised texture on the wooden walls of an elevator and I translated it into ink and paper.” The pattern is made of “two types of strokes over and over in different directions.”

It’s not simple for me to draw a wavy line – the residual effects of an old thumb sprain still results in a hiccup in certain pen positions on long strokes. In my attempts keep the lines smooth and balanced while drawing the opposite “wave”, I kept repeating to myself “onion” … “onion”… Since Eden is from Georgia, I probably could have said “Vidalia” … “Vidalia” … moving right along, here’s Eden.

I am relatively new to tangling, having started in the fall of 2011. I am a longstanding quilter and general crafter. I found myself practicing quilting patterns during parent seminars this past fall. The designs began evolving from what could practically be made in a quilting scenario to patterns I just liked to draw. That is when I went looking and stumbled onto Zentangle. I am quite taken by it and its portability and the quick results – as a mom of three fairly young children time is at a premium around here.

Eden’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Groovy are here, along with several examples of her very lovely Zentangle-inspired art.

I can’t resist sharing this from Eden too, “Thanks so much for the work you do at Tangle Patterns – it is a truly invaluable store of knowledge and visual yumminess!

Visual yumminess, I like that!

Check out the tag edenh for more of Eden’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

** For those not familiar, Vidalias are the sweetest most delicious onions you’ve ever tasted and they come from Vidalia, GA. They’re Georgia’s “Official State Vegetable”. In fact, the 35th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival was just this past weekend. How about that. (Break out the cheddar Hon, the Vidalias are coming.)

Update: For assistance on creating the ogee grid base of Groovy, see How to draw three types of grids for your Zentangles.

  • Nice pattern. I also have a tangle pattern called Groovy that I did in 2010. Naming is such a hard thing to do!

This tangle looks very familiar to me; I think I have seen the same design on a building somewhere—in my mind as I picture it it was a rich dark red-browm. It’s a beautiful tangle-can’t wait to try it! Thank You for sharing.
