How to draw ALLIUM

Zentangle pattern: AlliumThis simple tangle from JJ LaBarbera was inspired by a photo of a tattoo. JJ chose the name Allium because “the pattern reminds me of an onion with its many layers. Allium is the Genus of the onion and I thought that sounded good. ”

According to Mr. Google, Allium is “A bulbous plant (genus Allium) of the lily family that includes the onion and its relatives (e.g., garlic, leek, and chives).”

JJ writes that she has trouble keeping this pattern small, and she does a great job in her illustrations of using the Zentangle® principle of “drawing behind” producing dimension with overlapping objects.

Personally, I liked drawing Allium small because when I let it grow it seemed to get out of control for me. And sometimes I have trouble with the “drawing behind” thing too – this was one of those times.

JJ posted the inspirational photo and demonstrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Allium, here. She also features a striking white-on-black version of her tangle.

Thank goodness the site is back to normal (and I now have a much more rigorous backup routine as a result of the “experience”). Thanks so much for your emails and comments of support through all the technical snafus the site had yesterday. Those really meant a lot to me, they made me smile through a tough day.
