Recently I was browsing through a World Market flyer from the weekend newspaper (known locally as “the mullet wrapper”) and spotted an appealing line of hand painted dinnerware from their Asian Batik collection.
The dinnerware is decorated with Bales (a pattern seen very often on a wide variety of consumer products from rugs and pillows to … dinnerware) and another attractive pattern I’ve named Bateek (original, no?! 😉 ).
Update 08/10/2012: The Asian Batik dinnerware on the World Market website is no longer available but fortunately I had a picture in my files to share:
I knew the pattern would be simple to deconstruct and I love how it looks. Dressed up with a little shading added, it also takes on a nice dimensional quality.
Below are my step-by-step instructions for drawing the Bateek tangle pattern.
The charm of this tangle is in not being too perfect with the lines radiating out from the center dot, as you will see by looking closely at the picture of the dinnerware. So in Step 4 if you draw the lines as radii (so to speak), not across the complete diameter you get that looser, casual effect.
Bateek is fun to draw and makes a good filler as well as a good border tangle. Warping the initial grid could produce some interesting effects too. Enjoy!

Beautiful pattern! Can’t wait to use it!
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions when doing a design on a leather white or light colored pocketbook?
Do you need to spray it with a sealer once you are done?
Dale
Love it! Inspiration is everywhere!

I saw the same ad and I had to go to World Market to buy a plate. No plates left, so I bought a bowl to put candy in for Zentangle class. I thought the same thing about the patterns and love that you did a step-out. Thanks! Great minds share the same thoughts.
Great pattern, can’t wait to try it.
Ooh I love that one!
Linda, I know this is a few months late, but I wanted to let you that your post & new tangle inspired me to visit World Market earlier this fall…I bought a cup and dish (saucer?) for my make-up brushes, and thought I could also bring it to classes to show them. Well, I like my cup & saucer so much for my makeup brushes, I didn’t ever want to have to empty it and risk toting around with my art supplies, so I had to go back and purchase another set to show students.
I love the tangle you christened “Bateek,” too. I have shared this with some of my elementary students, after showing them the ceramic cup & dish/saucer. They appreciate it, too.
So…thank you!

Thanks Amy! I love getting comments and I’m sure World Market is glad of your business too 🙂 – so glad your students liked Bateek.
I just used this pattern and really love it. Thank you!
