Happy Hallowe’en to you if you enjoy such spooky celebrations.
Those of you who’ve been around with me for a while might remember I call Hallowe’en the start of the Sugar Season, it lasts from Hallowe’en through Easter.
It’s so tough to resist that constant temptation for months on end, regardless of the age of the child within 😉
What sweet treat do you find hard to resist? I’m usually a salty snacks kinda gal but my downfall at this time of year is M&M’s and anything dark chocolate with the name Lindt on it …
In keeping with the Hallowe’en theme, today we have Texas CZT Suzanne McNeill’s super easy Twilight Zone tangle.
Twilight Zone is from a very long time ago near the beginnings of the Zentangle® age and one of Suzanne’s first Zentangle booklets, Zentangle 2 (the updated version).
Twilight Zone is most effective in an op art kind of way, I think, when you curve your strokes enough in Steps 1 and 2 to get the vortex effect. Wikipedia tells us:
Op artworks are abstract, with many better-known pieces created in black and white. Typically, they give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or swelling or warping.
Try using Twilight Zone to fill any kind of shape – for example it looks very cool when used to fill a heart.
When you use straight strokes for Steps 1 and 2 you end up with a variation Suzanne published in Zentangle 7 named Radio Waves.
Suzanne illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Twilight Zone below where she includes an interesting variation to explore. Fox Chapel Publishing (who hold the copyright) and Suzanne have graciously given me permission to post her copyright-protected images on TanglePatterns for your reference.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Oh, my! I’ve loved optical illusions since I was an early teen, and have been drawing some of my own. Oddly, it never occurred to me to draw the “Twilight Zone” illusion, though I’ve been a fan of the show since its inception.
Just tried this tangle, and I can see it’s going to be one that I’ll be drawing again and again!
It’s beautiful! I really like it. Thanks for sharing your tangle talent.
