How to draw ORIGONIO

Hi everyone, thanks so much for joining me today 🙂

Our easy Monday tangle is called Origonio and it’s Isabel Wallis’s second tangle on the site. Last month she shared her Zajo tangle with us.

Isabel describes her latest,

This is a pattern that is like origami, like playing with cuts and folds on paper.

Time for a quick check on Wikipedia for the term Origami,

Origami (from ori meaning “folding”, and kami meaning “paper” (kami changes to gami due to rendaku)) is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture.

In modern usage, the word “origami” is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin.

The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques.

Modern origami practitioners generally discourage the use of cuts, glue, or markings on the paper. Origami folders often use the Japanese word kirigami to refer to designs which use cuts.

… Many origami books begin with a description of basic origami techniques which are used to construct the models. This includes simple diagrams of basic folds like valley and mountain folds, pleats, reverse folds, squash folds, and sinks. There are also standard named bases which are used in a wide variety of models, for instance the bird base is an intermediate stage in the construction of the flapping bird. Additional bases are the preliminary base (square base), fish base, waterbomb base, and the frog base.

As for our Origonio tangle:

Origonio is lots of fun to tangle, it makes a great ribbon-style tangle as well as an all-over one. It’s kind of like a grid tangle without the grid. For my example I used Isabel’s second variation, without shading.

Isabel illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Origonio below where she includes two variations on the theme. Easy peasy fun!
