Wirbel is from Austrian tangler Zuhal Fischer, “Wirbel means swirl in German.”
And for the record – you just know I had to wonder about the origins of her name …
This name derives from the Arabic “zuhal”, meaning “Saturn (planet)”. Zuhal is the planet Saturn adored as a deity by the ancient Arabians.
How cool to be named for a planet! Wirbel is Zuhal’s first tangle on the site.
She introduces herself and her tangle:
Not so long ago, I discovered Zentangle®. I am a teacher in a primary school in a small village in Austria, not so far from the German border.
My mother was born on Cyprus and my father is an Austrian. I was born in Austria and happy to live here in this beautiful country but I also visited lovely Cyprus already a few times in the past.
In Cyprus you can buy beautiful artisanal products, for example hand painted plates. I like them very much and regular I take a look on the Internet to see the artisanal art of Cyprus.
It is there that I saw a picture of a hand painted tableware with a lovely swirly pattern. The tableware is not from Cyprus but is made in Mexico. Anyway I like the pattern drawn on it.
Wirbel is a bit different from the pattern on the pottery: the leaves under and beneath are equal and I deleted the tipples.
It is a very easy pattern, just pay attention on the fourth step for drawing the curls in the right direction. I like Wirbel the most, drawn in the round but you can also use this pattern like any other border.
Wirbel makes a lovely and simple addition to your Zentangle tiles. I’m sure there are many ways of spacing patterns like this but I like to begin with the orbs in the center of the floral element and space those out first then build the other elements around those.
